Big Stars, Not-so-big Stars: Which Do You Choose?

We all have certain taste with regards to everything. We might like certain characteristic of something and at the same time dislike a part of it. Similarly, we all have different taste when it comes to evaluating movies. Certain movies appeal to us while some just do not make sense.
When we choose what movies to watch, what aspects do we consider? We may look at how the movie was appreciated by the mass or how much bucks it was able to produce, or we may also look at how the movie was produced and planned. If you ask me, I usually choose a movie based on how popular it is. In other words, I usually "go with the flow". Since I am a late watcher and I am so practical that I would wait for movie reviews before actually watching the movie, I would often miss out the whole point of surprise and as a result, I won't be able to enjoy it. My being practical would turn out to be useless.
But what really push people to watch a certain movie? First, it can be because of the multi-awarded stars that starred in a particular film. Of course we expect that these highest paid celebrities, when combined would make the movie a ...
... complete blockbuster. This is, however, isn't always the case. Okay. So they are good actors, they all have the "it" factor, they are pretty and stunning, they are gorgeous and hunks and yes, the movie production is so rich that they can afford the paychecks of these stars. But are they in for a good plot? Although movies like these have trailers which are really enticing that we can't wait to watch it in the big screen, we should not fall prey into these movies. It would be practical to first wait for honest reviews (not just hoax movie reviews which are all publicity) like what I usually do before deciding to watch. Generally a movie production can only afford 2 big stars (and by big star I mean grosser, multi-awarded star), the leading man and his leading lady (or 3 if they prefer the adversary to be a big star too). Let me give a very good example of such. Ocean's 12. For me, it is a big joke. The story and everything. Although it is very amusing to see these celebrities into one movie, it still is not worth it for me.
No, we move on to the other side of the story. People who watch for movies not because of the stars but because of its plot. These usually do not have much advertising propaganda nor are they very well financed. Generally, most of these movies are really low budget films. Take for example independent films. I have recently watched an independent film and it really deserved all the good things. These movies usually show the realities in life (i.e. poverty). These kinds of movies are really eye-openers to what is happening in the world. There are no special effects, no big stars and practically not much of all those big films in terms of budget. But they certainly do offer a lot.
So there you go. Next time there is a new movie coming out, remember this article.
