Exhaust fans, by nature are meant to eliminate moisture from any enclosed space and bathroom exhaust fans like range hoods have become an indispensable accessory in any home. Exhaust fans are very necessary in bathrooms because they remove foul smells, clear condensation off mirrors and keep excess moisture at bay. Excessive moisture is detrimental to the structure of the walls and ceilings and also encourages mold, bacteria, mildew, insects and dust mites which flourish in these moist conditions. Exhaust fans help fight these allergens and dehumidifies the bathroom space.

Exhaust fans in bathrooms can be mounted either on the outside walls or on the ceiling of the bathroom. A few of them come with humidity-sensitive sensors which turn on the fan when moist air is prevalent and turn it off when excess moisture is removed. It is a good idea to check on your bathroom exhaust fan periodically and replace it if necessary, especially if you live in an older house since the odds are high that the fans will be noisy, energy-inefficient and unable to move air well.

The newer fans are more energy-efficient, quiet ...
... and move air and moisture well. Before purchasing new exhaust bath fans look out for HIV ratings which monitor the noise and energy-efficiency level and compare between brands. The best bathroom exhaust fans use up about 20 wattage of lighting and have a sound rating of 0.5 sones or even less. Older fans will typically be using up to 80 watts and show 4 sones of sound units. Steer clear of Brands which do not have any HIV ratings as more often than not they will be noisy.

Bathroom fans for the express purpose of acting as an exhaust to get rid of excessive moisture, foul odour must be chosen carefully. They should come with replaceable parts and should be capable of continuous usage. A three-inch exhaust port and duct is of not much use and it is better to make an investment in a larger bathroom exhaust fan which is energy-efficient and does the job well. A ventilation fan or an open window is the norm of the majority of the building codes but builders usually opt for the easier option of providing an open window. It also works out cheaper for them. But, for users, problems arise if the window cannot be kept open for some reason, for instance, in cold weather while taking a bath or a shower or if the window faces another apartment window etc. In such cases, the bathroom can turn into an uncomfortable place.

Bathroom exhaust fans therefore are necessary for the comfort of the user and have become a common feature of most homes and offices now.
