Toyota Hilux was introduced in March of 1968. The first model was known as the RN10 and came in a short wheelbase model with a 1.5L engine. In 1969 long wheelbase version was added to the line up. This was later replaced with a 1.6L engine in 1971. Hilux is in its seventh generation now. The second generation of the Hilux came to the market in 1972 as the RN20 model. A more comfortable interior was specified along with visual exterior updates. Hilux went under a radical revamp in 1975. It was made to be both larger and much more luxurious than previous models. In August 1978 Toyota introduced the third generation of the Hilux. A four wheel drive option introduced in early 1979. The four wheel drive versions included a solid front axle and leaf suspension setup.

In 1983 fourth generation of the Hilux was introduced. In the lineup, included for the first time, was an Xtracab option which was a two row extended cab version for more seating room in the cab. ... redesign to the Hilux was done in 1988 when Toyota introduced the fifth generation of the Hilux. The Xtracab options now came with what were called jump seats that folded up when not in use to allow for more room behind the front seats, a feature more in line with the competitors at that time. The sixth generation of the Hilux started its production in 1995.

This generation saw many badge changes across the globe as well as numerous engine and suspension options. The current seventh generation was introduced in 2005. This version increased in size and was now classified as a midsized pick up. Hilux got a facelift in 2008 adding sleeker lines and a smoother appearance to the vehicle.
