A humidifier is a residence appliance used to raise the level of air moisture inside. To answer the question - How does a humidifier operate? first one needs to understand why it is needed.

In parts of the globe where there are four seasons, the cold climate can be very uncomfortable because of the level of water vapor in the air. Humidity is a measure of that water vapor in the atmosphere. When the humidity level is high, it means the air is already holding plenty of water and cannot absorb anymore. Thus we do not perspire and one feels hotter than it actually is. However when humidity is low, that means the air can hold more moisture in, so we sweat faster and the air sucks in the water vapor. Therefore one feels colder than we actually are.

Neither of these extremes is wanted. At low humidity, one could suffer from skin dryness and the temperature will feel like dropping. Wooden furniture may also have damage as the dryness makes them shrink and crack. To get around this hazard, a humidifier can be employed to artificially raise the humidity.

So how does a humidifier work? Well, ...
... basically it pumps water vapor into the air thus making the humidity level rise. When the humidity is increaded, water can no longer turn into vapor. Moisture in our bodies and in objects will then raise and one feels warmer.

There are various types of humidifiers. Therefore, how does a humidifier work? It depends on what kind it is.

Evaporation.

This kind of humidifier has two main parts: a fan and a wet base. The fan circulates air over a wet area. The air then carries the water vapor alongside with it and spreads it across the place. If you operate a humidifier of this kind, ensure you clean the wet pad often to elude bacterial contamination.

Steam or Vaporizers.

A vaporizer puts in water vapor to the atmosphere by expelling steam. The machine has a container where water is heated to vapor and then released. Any left over minerals are left behind when the water evaporates. The advantage of this kind of humidifier is that it destroys bacteria during the boiling process, so it is not as dirty.

Warm Mist.

This humidifier is basically the same as a vaporizer. However before transmitting steam into the room, the system cools it down first. The result is therefore warm misty air.

Cool Mist

A cool mist humidifier functions by expelling water droplets into the air. Obviously this is only as clean as the water that is put into it, as the water is not boiled.

Ultrasonic

This humidifier uses high-frequency sound waves to break up and blows tiny water droplets into a room. Most bacteria is killed in the procedure, however not everything.

It is a good thing to understand how a humidifier functions. The operation of a humidifier will allow one be more comfortable during cold weather. They will also help humidity-sensitive perishables; for example wood, wine and cigars to last longer. Purchase the correct kind for your family and enjoy a warmer winter.
