Wheelchairs- The Different Types
A wheelchair is a medical device used for mobility by people for whom walking is difficult or impossible, due to illness or disability. There are many types of wheelchairs designed for different purposes and types of users. The following is an outline of the common categories of wheelchairs, describing the essential characteristics and intended uses.
Transport Wheelchairs:
This type of wheelchair may also be called a companion wheelchair or a travel wheelchair. The wheels are small and low to the ground, as they are not designed for the user to move themselves. A caregiver is needed to operate this kind of wheelchair. As a result, they are usually lightweight and compact, making it easier to transport the user and fold up the wheelchair for storage.
Manual Wheelchairs:
A standard manual wheelchair has two small wheels in the front, and two large wheels in the back with a "push rim" that allows the user to move themselves. Thus, manual wheelchairs can be operated by either the user or a caregiver. There are many ...
... variations of a manual wheelchair:
• Sport: For athletes requiring the use of a wheelchair who participate in various sports. They are custom designed for each sport.
• Reclining: For persons who cannot have their hips or knees at a 90 degree angle, who are susceptible to bedsores, or who need to have their torso at full length, such as during feeding.
• Tilt: For users who are susceptible to bedsores, but maintains a normal posture. Some wheelchairs both tilt and recline.
• Pediatric: Designed for use by children. They are smaller than standard wheelchairs and are often adjustable.
Other key features of the wheelchair that may be specialized are its width, weight, and flexibility. Wheelchairs can come in a narrow width for petite users. They can also come in wide and extra wide widths for obese users. Bariatric wheelchairs, also known as heavy-duty wheelchairs, are made for users weighing more than 350 pounds and is built to withstand the increased weight. Lightweight wheelchairs are also available. The ability to fold up is another feature that may or may not be present. For many, a folding wheelchair is absolutely essential.
Electric Wheelchairs:
This type may also be called a motorized or powered wheelchair. The user operates the wheelchair using hand controls. It is powered by a rechargeable battery. It does not use a caregiver. The type of battery and drive method vary and are a matter of preference. Electric wheelchairs have many levels of sophistication. Some newer models have the ability to stand on two wheels and climb curbs. However, such features increase the cost dramatically.
Power Scooters:
These are a close relative of the electric wheelchair, but there are several key differences. First, a scooter used handlebars rather than compact hand controls, meaning upper body mobility is required. Second, scooters are more agile and easier to use outdoors and in public places. Third, they are usually considerably cheaper than electric wheel chairs. Fourth, they are not designed to be transported in cars. Finally, they do not offer as much comfort as an electric wheelchair, as the focus is on its functional capabilities.
