Ec Has Launched Antitrust Inquiry Into Gazprom
The European Commission that is EC has launched an antitrust investigation into Gazprom over the concerns that the state-controlled energy giant of Russia may be abusing its dominant position in the supplying of gas to the Europe. This entire taking place on a backdrop of raids that were held in September 2011.
In such kind of a bold move which is quite likely to raise tensions between the European Union that is EU as well as Russia, the EC had to say that it was actually investigating the suspected anti-competitive practices that can actually cause higher prices and deterioration of security of supply. It also had to add that in the final run such kind of a behavior is going to harm the consumers EU, which they do not at all want. Gazprom supplies as much as one-third of the gas all around Europe. This probe from the side of EC is looking at the practices of Gazprom in central as well as eastern region Europe, as these are the areas which are especially dependent on the imports of gas from Russia.
The commission then was of the view that it was now investigating three suspected anti-competitive practices: ...
... where first was that Gazprom might have divided the market of gas by hindering the free flow of gas across the member states. Second as that Gazprom may have also prevented the diversification of the supply of the gas. And last and final was that Gazprom might have also imposed prices that are unfair on its customers by linking the price of the gas to the prices of the oil prices. A spokesman of the EC had to say that this probe had its focus on Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia as well as Lithuania. It was also quite possible that more countries can get added to its remit in the course of the investigation if any further evidence gets emerged.
The EC then was of the view that this kind of an opening of a formal sort of proceedings of the investigation does not jump to conclusions the result of the examination; but it only means that the Commission will take care of the case on main concern. Gazprom against this entire allegation just had to say that let them investigate. The investigation is following the anti-trust raids in the month of September in the year 2011 at the premises of Gazprom and also the other gas companies in several countries of the EU.
