Diabetic retinopathy is a potentially blinding complication of diabetes that damages the eyes retina. It affects 80 to 90% of all patients diagnosed with diabetes.

At first, you may notice no changes in your vision. But don't let diabetic retinopathy fool you. It could get worse over the years and threaten your good vision. With timely treatment, 90 percent of those with advanced diabetic retinopathy can be saved from going blind.
High levels of blood sugar can lead to early Cataract development and or can lead to a condition known as Diabetic Retinopathy.

Nine out of ten people with diabetes may eventually develop a complication that affects the eyes known as diabetic retinopathy. This condition affects the blood vessels inside the eye (mainly blood vessels on retina) and can lead to blindness, however if diagnosed and treated early much of this vision loss can be prevented.

What is diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a term used to describe the change in the blood vessels of the retina. The retina is the thin membrane, which covers the back of the eye. This is a very important ...
... membrane, which actually receives images from outside. & I.e. we see our surroundings. There are two stages of retinopathy, nonproliferative and Proliferative.

Non-proliferative is the earlier stage, and is more common.

In some diabetics, the retinopathy can progress to the next stage called as proliferative stage. New abnormal vessels can develop in the retina and grow towards the center of the eye.

How is diabetic retinopathy diagnosed?

It can be diagnosed on proper eye examination by an
Eye specialist. There are no symptoms before it can be really serious. Some of the symptoms are seeing black dots in front of the eye. Bleeding in the eye causes this. This is one of the reasons diabetics should undergo regular eye check ups to detect changes on retina. Tests like fluroscein angiography are done too detect and to find the severity of diabetic retinopathy. It can be treated with Laser, by some injections in the eye like IVTA. Few patients may require surgical intervention.
Fluorescein angiography are diagnostic tests which use special cameras to photograph the structures in the back of the eye. These tests are very useful for finding leakage or damage to the blood vessels which nourish the retina (light sensitive tissue). A dye is injected into a vein in the arm of the patient. The dye travels through the circulatory system and reaches the vessels in the retina .

A camera equipped with special filters that highlight the dye is used to photograph the fluorescein as it circulates though the blood vessels in the back of the eye (retina ).

If there are any circulation problems, swelling, leaking or abnormal blood vessels, the dye and its patterns will reveal these in the photographs. The doctor can then make a determination as to the diagnosis, and possible treatment options for the patient.
In many cases, these photos are taken with a digital camera system, allowing the physician to interpret the results immediately.
