Enduro Bikes

Enduro bikes are motorcycles originally designed for enduro races; timed long distance, cross country competitions. These days, Enduro bikes are used more diversely in a variety of competitions, challenges, and pleasure rides.
Types
Modern Enduro bikes are closely related to dual sport motorcycles and Motocross (MX) bikes with enduro specific features like special engines and oversized fuel tanks. Enduro bike maintenance is comparable to that of MX bikes; the exception include the necessity for more collision prevention and repair maintenance as well as more durable components with long life engines. Enduro bikes possess a motocross type of suspension combined with more reliable engines along with larger gas tanks for longer trips.
Some Enduro bikes do have common features such as quieter mufflers and headlights which meet state specific regulations making them street viable. One of the key aspects to the Enduro bikes is that they are lighter overall than most motorcycles creating a more enhanced maneuverability.
History

Enduro bikes made their initial appearance in 1913 at the International Six Day Trial, currently referred to as the International Six Days Enduro, in Carlisle, England. Enduro races require riders and their Enduro bikes to successfully navigate roughly 777 miles over a variety of terrains without access to repairs beyond what the rider can carry. The earliest competitions were conducted along dirt roads that were common to the era; modern enduro competitions seek out off roads paths to traverse.
Most Enduro bikes are lightweight and hearty; able to take harsh roads and a beating. The Enduro bikes picked up popularity in the United States in the early 1970s after Steve McQueen drove on in signature competition.
Today
Modern races have approved Enduro bikes in a wider selection of races and challenges making them a favorite among riders. Current Enduro bikes have seen upgrades based on MX racing bike technologies. The Enduro bike picked up MX conversions like the change from a 2-stroke to a 4 stroke engines which make them more compatible with the newer hybrid races like the Enduro-X.
Owning an Enduro Bike
Owners of Enduro bikes should be aware that they are heavily regulated and are not technically “street legal” due to their deep connection to their MX counterparts. Basically, Enduro bikes are not designed for highway use and are recommended for off road areas. Each state is different regarding the registration of Enduro bikes; some states grant more leeway than others. For example, Pennsylvania and Vermont are more likely to grant unrestricted registrations than New York and New Jersey who possess stricter regulations. States like California require that Enduro bikes pass particular motor vehicle requirements, like the ability to pass an emissions test, in order to be registered.
