Limestone is a very common sedimentary rock of biochemical origin. It is composed mostly of the mineral calcite (CaCO3). It most commonly forms in clear, warm, shallow marine waters. Sometimes it is almost pure calcite, but most lime stones are filled with lots of other minerals and sand and they are called dirty lime stones. Pure lime stones are basically white or almost white in color. When mixed with impurities like clay, sand, organic remains, iron oxide and other materials, lime stones is available in various colors.

The formation of lime stones is the result of constant deposition of shells, bones and other calcium rich goods at the bottom of lakes and seas. The grains in form of shells, bones and other go on accumulating on some dead and buried organic matter or fossils.
