An orangery is defined as a conservatory or a greenhouse which was developed basically for the purpose of growing citrus trees. The orangeries were mainly used to keep the citrus trees under cover during the harsh winter season so that these could survive. Once it was established that the orangeries could be used for protecting lime and orange trees, there use was extended to other tender varieties of plants as well as some exotic plants and shrubs. The origin of these structures can be traced back to the Renaissance period when a boom in the glass making technology resulted in the setting up of large expanses made out of clear glass. Although, an orangery looked like a modern day greenhouse, it was considered a symbol of wealth and prestige.

Today, most of the early built orangeries are not used as conservatories anymore and have been converted into a house that is perfectly formed and small adorned with vast and well proportioned grounds. As a result, you can enjoy a spectacular view as far as your eyes can see. Given the solitary areas where these structures ...
... were put up, you can enjoy a peaceful and calm life, regardless of the outside weather. And when it comes to the elderly, an orangery can actually be a boon. The structure does not have an upstairs and hence, saves the older people from the trouble of climbing up and down the stairs.

The most important point of difference between an orangery and a conservatory is that the former has a flat roof with little glazing while the later comes with a fully glazed roof. This means that in an orangery you can enjoy small glimpses of the beautiful sky without having to experience an excessive sauna bath kind of an effect.
