How often do you buy vegetables or fruits based on their color? Do you think of trying out a dessert or a cold beverage afterassessing itshue-attractiveness?

The color of any object plays a huge role in defining its quality and ingredients. This same principle is used when it comes to testing different solutions, and the scientific name for it is Colorimetry.

Colorimetry is a unique technique that is used for checking the concentration of colored compounds in a solution. A handy device used for this purpose is known as a pocket colorimeter. It determines the absorbance of light by various colors in different environments. This write-up will explain exactly how this device works.

Usually used for water testing, the pocket colorimeter IIand its previous counterpart work on the Beer-Lambart law. This law states that the concentration of a particular color in the solution is based on the absorption of light by the shade. This device ...
... consists of the following:

• A low voltage lamp that acts as a light source, which is the base for testing.

• An aperture, which may be adjusted as per the requirement of the solution or water container being tested.

• Colored filters to monitor the exact absorbing capacity of each shade.

• A cuvette to hold the solutions for testing.

• A detector or a photo-resistor to know and measure the light transmitted for accurate calculations.

• A meter for displaying the final output provided by thedetector.

• A regulator for voltage, to avert the risk of equipment failure due to fluctuations of power.

• An additionalcuvette, light source and detector to help compare between pure and colored solutions.

A portable colorimeter is generally used to test 20 to 90 parameters of color in the solution. This easy-to-use device usually comes with features like auto wavelength selection, calibration generated by the users and datalogging capabilities. Designed to be durable and rugged, these good quality color-testing devices may be waterproof, chemical-resistant and dustproof.

Along with solution and water testing, this testing instrument is also used for various other applications. For instance, in commercial setups, the colorimeter is used to enhance production as it offers simple numeric values to all variables of the product that may be affected by changes in color.

Use the colorimeter to experience the wide range of benefits it offers first-hand!
