The United States, along with the rest of the world, is currently facing an economic depression that shows no sign of letting up anytime soon. People are quickly realizing that many of the items on their "need" list actually belong on the "want" list as budgets grow tight and communities struggle to ensure that their economies stay afloat. Most industries are already feeling the affects of a slowing economy- tickets for music concerts are down by 30%, for example, which makes a difference not only to the musicians and their crews, but also the venues that make their living off of such shows and the local union workers whose paychecks dwindle when there aren't many gigs to work.

Fortunately, that doesn't mean that vacation time is something that has to be put on hold. Of course, discount vacation packages do more than just help you afford the vacation you were planning, they also open up other travel opportunities that you might not have considered. It might be that you are feeling confident about your vacation budget this year, and rather than taking the trip you were planning, you found some discount cruises or group travel packages to several far-away destinations. Or, you might decide to give back to your local community, and plan in an extra vacation nearby to you. It's pretty amazing how much fun you can have traveling just an hour or two away to visit a nearby city.

If you're taking off for travels on the local scale, really make it count. Visit a nearby city during an event that appeals to you, such as during a music and film festival. Look into what is happening in that city, and plan accordingly. Conversely, if there is something you'd rather avoid in your own town, plan around that. Live near the speedway? Why not schedule your vacation so that you leave before race traffic arrives and return after the event is over and everyone has left.
