Doors are basically a functional item, there to divide a room from other rooms and provide some insulation. Because they are functional it doesn’t mean they cannot be decorative as well and add to the aesthetic appeal of an interior space. This is particularly true of oak doors which provide a luxurious appearance with a sense of solidity which adds a feeling of quality to a room or entrance.

What is a commercial oak door?

Oak is often used in commercial buildings where the solid feel and texture of the oak finish adds to the décor. In a domestic situation an internal door is opened and closed infrequently, indeed as most homes are centrally heated they are more often than not left open. The usage that they are put to is therefore limited, but this is not the case where the door is used in a commercial environment. Virtually all commercial doors have to ...
... be closed when not in use and that is why they are usually fitted with a door closer to make sure that happens. An oak door used in an office or hotel therefore has to be robust and may play a role beyond being a partition between rooms or corridors.

A commercial door will quite often be required to act as a fire door to restrict the spread of flames and smoke in the event of a fire or it may be required to have acoustic properties to deaden any ambient noise. So it is clear a commercial oak door can have to fill a variety of functions beyond a mere room divider.

Special oak doors for commercial use.

The manufacture of fire doors or those with acoustic properties is usually achieved by the inclusion of appropriate materials within the core of the door. By the same token, suppliers have to undertake rigorous testing to establish the credentials of their products when making claims about their future performance in use vis-à-vis to building regulations.

Good door suppliers take specifications very seriously and are able to offer variants of their oak door ranges that are suitable for use within the more exacting commercial environment. Fire doors for example are always supported by third party audited accreditation. There is a mandatory requirement for fire door assemblies to comply with certain criteria laid down by building regulations, and third party accreditation enables purchasers to use products with the confidence that they have been manufactured within strict tolerances and from appropriate materials.

There are also regulations that are relevant in respect of disabled access, which might involve doors being of a width appropriate to allow the free passage of a wheelchair through the opening, or may in certain instances, require that a door is fitted with glazed openings that enable a wheelchair user to look through the glass. In the case of a fire door, this glazed aperture may enable a rescuer to see through the door to view what lies beyond without having to breach the protective barrier provided by the door in the event of a fire.

Whether the oak doors are designated for use within a domestic property or a commercial development, solutions can be found that will fulfil needs not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also from a regulatory perspective.
