Job Skills - Are You Growing Yours?

It doesn’t matter what industry you work in folks, the world is constantly changing and if you think that doesn’t apply to your industry you will get left behind sooner or later. Considering the interconnected world we find ourselves in many companies are finally starting to realize that they can learn from each other including from other industries. This is how many of the top companies in the world got where they are today – the story of FedEx comes to mind and how they borrowed concepts from the banking industry and applied it to the shipping business. The same principle applies to today’s workers – you need to seek fresh ideas to truly grow.
Part of the game here requires you to think a bit differently that you are used to and may make some people feel uncomfortable, because you may need to look at things from an entrepreneur’s perspective. Many people given the resources can be a leader or make a solid contribution to the company they work for by keeping an eye out for ways to innovate. Taking college courses or other training in your spare time will increase your job skills even if the class isn’t even ...
... related to your industry. You may ask how that is possible. It’s because when you go out of your way to seek knowledge or explore you make new connections in many cases you hadn’t seen before. No obviously taking a class that is related to your job or industry will likely be of more value immediately since it looks good on your resume but also consider courses or seminars outside your field of expertise because many times it’s a question of how you apply that knowledge that makes all the difference.
In the Forbes article, it references the “skills gap” this country as well as many other places are experiencing – no longer does a degree ensure you will have a job, you must keep learning new skills to really get ahead in today’s job market. This is also because the line has become blurred between industries where skills that once we’re not relevant to a job title now are. Thankfully this has also led to greater sharing of ideas among colleagues and even competitors to forward their overall goals to the next stage of development. So find a way to keep your job skills fresh and learn new things. There is a saying I heard many years ago, “when you stop learning, you start dying.” That is very relevant in today’s competitive job market and with the world in general.
Now with the Money article and others I have read previously, it also important for workers to realize that their performance is directly connected to how the company performs as a whole. To put that bluntly, an employee sole purpose is to make company money. But to make that more palatable and more helpful to these same employees, they need to take ownership of their role within a company and to its growth – quoting the article “Act like the owner of the company instead of another deckhand.” If an employee goes out of their way to create value for the company, that employee now becomes more valuable and will hopefully be rewarded in some way for their vision. I think you can see how that translates into any job at every level from the mail room to the board room.
To summarize, think about your future and what it’s going to take to realize your dreams. Part of how you will get there will because you have grown your job skills and as a person with a strong vision of what you want to see happen in that future. So take a serious look at where you are now in your career and where you see yourself in 5-10 years then decide now if you are on the right path. If not, rekindle your drive and ambition you had in the past to make things happen. Keep learning!
