Signs You May Be Experiencing Hearing Loss

Hearing loss impacts thousands of people of all ages each year for a wide variety of reasons. It often occurs slowly over a long period of time, which can make it difficult for the sufferer to notice. The transition is so slow that it is difficult to notice changes occurring. Here are some signs to look for:

• Is the volume on the television higher than it used to be? Perhaps you used to always set it at eight, but now you need it at twelve to hear your favorite show. Do your companions complain that the television or radio is too loud when they and you are enjoying it together?

• Have you become confused by a conversation or directions and then later found out that you misunderstood what was said? Sometimes people with hearing issues become embarrassed when they hear a conversation incorrectly and give a response that doesn’t make sense and has nothing to do with the topic actually being discussed.

• Have you found yourself asking a waitress, store clerk or family member to repeat their question multiple times and then given up in embarrassment when you still didn’t understand what they asked?

• Have your loved ones or close friends mentioned the possibility to you that your hearing doesn’t seem to be what it once was or suggested you have your hearing tested?

If you can relate to any of these situations, consider making an appointment with your primary care physician right away to discuss your concerns. He will examine you to ensure a simple condition, such as a sinus or ear infection, is not causing the hearing loss. If needed, he will refer you to a hearing specialist, also known as an audiologist.

The audiologist will conduct a hearing test to access your situation. The hearing test is quick, simple and painless. The specialist may whisper words to you at varying levels from around the room to get a baseline of your hearing. A tuning fork may be used to gently tap on your knees or elbows to determine if you hear the vibrations. A small device placed behind your ear will help locate the source of the hearing loss and extent of the damage.

If it is determined that hearing loss has occurred the specialist will recommend a treatment plan. Hearing aids are frequently suggested. There are a wide variety of brands and models on the market. The specialist will go over the advantages and challenges of each type and help you decide on the one that will work best for your situation.
