Thekkady and Periyar are a part of the Idukki district of Kerala. Tourists are attracted to this destination as this place is blessed with savanna grasslands, semi-evergreen moist deciduous forest and dense green forest. These forests have been inhabited by Nilgiri langurs, lion-tailed Macaques, and gaur, tigers, sambar and elephants. There is ample scope for trekking and mountain walking offered by the Periyar wild life sanctuary.

The Only Tiger Reserve

The Periyar tiger reserve is the only tiger reserve in Kerala at present. The attractions in Thekkady are centred on this reserve.
