Peru is a country filled with rich history and beautiful landscapes. The ancient site of Machu Picchu has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. The government requires permits for Inca Trail treks be obtained prior to the intended vacation date.

The more prominent archaeological finds of the Inca empire lay along this trail. With so many people wishing to traverse it, in order to properly conserve the aging structures, the Peruvian government has deemed it a necessity to limit how many tourists are allowed each year. There are no treks offered in February since that is the time set aside for the performance of maintenance projects.

One thing that makes this 43km stretch of trail so popular is the diverse and incredible scenery along the way. Taking the path through the heights of the Andes, one encounters Peruvian jungles, lush rainforests and will be treated to spectacular views of the valleys far below. One must plan ahead to attend such a trek because there is much necessary preparation required.

Each year, beginning in January, permits go on sale for the treks that can last ...
... between 2 and 7 days. A maximum of 500 people are allowed on the trail on any given day. This number includes all support staff including guides, cooks, aides and porters, which usually leaves no more than 200 permits left for tourists.

The government posts an annual calendar that will let everyone know how many permits will be issued for each day. Except for the first round, they are awarded on a first come, first served basis. Because they sell out so quickly, it is strongly advised to that travelers purchase their passes several months in advance.

Keep in mind that there are very rigid restrictions place on the purchase of these passes. Choose a reputable trekking company to avoid the possibility of potential scams. Each permit is non-refundable and non-transferable. If an agent offers a spot on a waiting list in exchange for a deposit, be aware that this is an illegal action since there are no such things.

All guides allowed on the passage are required to hold a license from the Peruvian officials. Legitimate tours should include a daily itinerary and plans to visit all the major structures. Clients should take precautions to verify the standing of their chosen agent.

Permits are issued only to the person for which the application was filed. They can not be given to someone different as a gift and once the date has been set, treks can not be adjusted. No refunds will be given on an awarded pass, even if something happens to prevent the client from attending their scheduled journey.

Information on permits for Inca Trail treks is closely verified against the passport that was used to file the application. Everything must match perfectly and the document must be valid for six months or more following the date the traveler enters Peru. Only after inspectors have been satisfied that the attendee is the one listed on the papers will one be allowed to begin their journey. Restrictions are not adjustable so clients are advised to inform themselves before proceeding with the process.
