When you are travelling abroad to a new country you have never been to, the first thing you try to do is look for something familiar. As strange as that might sound to some people, it is just one of those natural reactions the body has when faced with something unfamiliar. When you need to go out to get groceries for holiday flat, the same thing happens when we try to look for a store. You need to remember that you are in a different country and they most likely have something just as different. It is also tough to decide where you need to go, because you can’t be certain which store will have what you need.

What you need to then, is find your way to a local directory listing somewhere online. Once you have access to the net you can search for local food and wine retailers that are listed in the area you specify. That way you can find places that are right next door or on the way to the place you are heading. You might be thinking that the hotel you are staying at will cater for all those needs, and you are certainly correct in saying ...
... so, but there might be days where you have to travel and you will need to stop and get something to eat somewhere. If you can get access to the directory wherever you are, then you can find a place quite quickly. Local food retailers will usually consist of restaurants, grocery stores, butcheries and take-outs, however you can specify which one you want it will narrow the search down for you. Local wine retailers will generally include places that sell alcohol, and those are your liquor stores, bars, clubs and cocktail lounges. The locals usually know the area pretty well and they can recommend one or two spots for you to visit and they can also tell you which places to avoid. Either way, it is always welcomed advice when you are pointed in the right direction. The directories don’t always tell you what the place is like, but at least you still have the option to research it a bit further if you are still curious.

People often post their rants and raves on forums where other people can see them, and it works well as a feedback loop if you are trying to find out about the food at a particular restaurant. Once you have your list of places, you can head out and get what you need feeling comfortable about it.
