Without local news people would have little idea what is happening in their community. Even in modern times where people can contact each other instantly on their mobile phones or via email, people still need local news to give them the whole picture about what is happening locally.

Newspapers and other local news organisations can investigate stories in full and provide the correct balance to make sure people are properly informed about events in their community and not relying on gossip or hearsay.

Local news provides people with information about a range of topics that are relevant to them - crime, education, business, transport, local politics, the environment, sport and entertainment. It also helps people to understand the local impact of national events and trends.

Also, local news aids democracy by reporting on the activities of local authorities and other public bodies, thereby making them accountable to the public. Freedom of Information legislation has helped media organizations to do this.

The police are also assisted in their fight against crime, with local news organization issuing appeals ...
... to find crime suspects, witnesses and missing people.

Local news also enables people to publicise local events and activities which otherwise might receive little attention.

Because of local news, parents are able to find out what is happening in their children's schools, road users are able to find out about any local problems, and cinema-goers and theatre-goers are able to discover what they can see locally.

Also, sports fan can keep up with the fortunes of their local clubs.

Local news organisations traditionally take a balanced and responsible view. Unlike many national newspapers they are free of political bias and make sure that stories are covered in impartial way, offering opposing factions in any debate the chance to have their say. That way, readers can make up their own mind.

But when there is a serious problem facing the local community, local news organization will take a stand and speak out, even launching campaigns when necessary. Sometimes campaigns are just to support a local charity or individual, but sometimes they are to stop something that the majority of the local community feels is unjust - for example, the closure of a hospital. A local news organisation can help a lot in such matters.

Local news organisations also offer the chance for the community to have its say, through the use of readers' letters, polls and website comments.

New technology has helped local news organisations to improve the service they offer to the local community. Weekly newspapers have particularly gained, as they can now keep the public informed throughout the day rather than just once a week. People are able to discover about important local events almost instantly.

The web enables the local community to immediately know about local traffic problems, the weather, school closures and major incidents.

Through nostalgia articles local newspapers also keep the local community in touch with its own history.

Local newspapers also offer local traders the chance to advertise their products and services, and conversely for people to find out about local businesses and contact them.
