Most people assume that saving money is synonymous with sacrificing quality. But when it comes to vet bills, this may not always be true.

“Prevention is better than cure” – These are the words of wisdom that hold good for both human and pet health. So when it comes to your pet’s health-care, concentrating on well-being know where to spend the dollars goes a long way in making medical help affordable without sacrificing quality. Following are some of the tips to help you achieve that.

When at home:
Maintain a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle means a healthy diet along with plenty of exercise. The nutritional quality of the food is very important to be monitored and can be maintained easily with the help of good quality pet foods and supplements if required. Maintaining a healthy weight keeps a lot of long-term and ‘expensive to treat’ obesity related conditions at bay, conditions like diabetes, orthopaedic problems, heart related medical conditions and many more.

Help your pet practice good hygiene. Regular grooming, cleaning and nail-trimming can help prevent many types of infection. ...
... Dental hygiene is important to avoid tooth decay and gum diseases and is as simple as brushing your pet’s teeth at least 3 times a week.

Get pet insurance at the right time. It is always wise to get pet insurance while your pet is young and healthy. Even though you think you don’t spend a lot in vet bills at the moment, you never know when your pet might develop a serious condition, which will then most probably be excluded from your pet insurance policy if you didn’t already have pet insurance.

Whenever you visit the vet:

Schedule the routine physicals and lab work. A medical condition can be managed far more efficiently and economically if the vet can catch it earlier on. The most efficient way to do that is a complete physical examination. So whenever you drop into your vet’s for any pet – health – related reason, you should schedule your pet’s regular physical examination and lab works. Being proactive about the routine check-ups and lab works will help you save in the long run.

Keep up with the vaccines and titres. Various diseases can be prevented in pets through vaccination. Some vaccines are designed to help reduce the risk of vaccine-associated adverse events and save you money. Sometimes tittering can also help in providing an estimate of continued immunity against some diseases in your pet, which could allow for the vaccination to be waived.

When It's Time to Pay the Bill:

Pet Insurance can assist you. There’s nothing worse than knowing your pet’s health care is suffering because you did not get around to organising Pet Insurance. You would lose count of the number of times we hear clients say, when we have just diagnosed a very expensive condition in their pet; “I have been meaning to get Pet Insurance, but just haven’t gotten around to it”, “I guess now this bill is on me”.

Discuss your situation with your vet. Being shy doesn’t help if you are facing had times financially or do not have Pet Insurance. You can discuss your situation with your vet and request for a consideration of the same when prescribing the drugs or other products. In some cases, you may be able to get recommendations for less expensive, OTC options or even some home remedies if applicable.
