Internet Blocking Why It Doesn T Work

With all of the business-related advantages the Internet has provided for us since its inception in 1995, it has presented us with just as many personal benefits. It’s so easy now to decide whether or not you want to try that new restaurant for dinner tonight when you can quickly read reviews online before making a reservation. Keeping in touch with friends and family is as easy as logging onto a social media site and posting messages or digital photos. Tracking the progress of holiday gifts sent to relatives across the country is as easy as checking a confirmation number on the shipper’s website. And shopping itself has never been easier or more convenient than now, in the Internet age.
Considering all this, is it any wonder that employees with unlimited Internet access use it for personal reasons during the course of the workday? After all, none of us is perfect, and the temptation that the Internet presents is often difficult to pass by. Because of that temptation, a growing number of workers are regularly using the Internet for personal reasons while they’re at work. In fact, a lack of employee productivity ...
... due to misuse of the Internet is a problem for countless business owners and managers all around the U.S. and other countries as well.
In an effort to solve the problem, many employers have tried blocking websites that are not business-related. While there are many different products on the market that are designed for Internet blocking, that doesn’t mean that those products will result in an increase in employee activity. In fact, Blocking Websites often creates a whole new set of problems for employers.
Consider these facts:
Some blocked websites may eventually have a legitimate business use. Blocking software often groups websites together in categories, so it’s difficult to allow access to a few certain sites that would be a benefit to the business.
Different kinds of employees need access to different types of websites. For example, you may want to block banking websites from most of your employees, but accountants and other finance-related employees will need access to these sites to do their jobs.
Employees can still access “blocked” sites through their smart phones. The vast majority of U.S. workers carry smart phones with them to the workplace, which means they can access whichever websites they want to—including those that your software has “blocked.”
Blocking access to certain websites won’t motivate your employees to increase their productivity. In fact, it may have just the opposite effect—your employees may resent the fact that they don’t have access to certain sites, and that resentment could manifest itself in an even greater lack of productivity.
