Airports Serenading Passengers With Music

Many airports enjoy heavy traffic as a result of cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages. Now airports are increasingly looking to music as a way to entertain passengers while they wait for flights.

The following are examples of this growing trend:

• Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports offer a wide array of jazz, blues, folk and other genres of recorded music by local artists on overhead sound systems. Their playlist is searchable online by terminal, month, day, and time.

• Austin-Bergstrom International Airport offers 15 live music performance weekly as well as a round the clock soundtrack of recorded local music from a 2,400 song playlist. Songs are added frequently to keep the mix fresh and current.

• Seattle-Tacoma International Airport rolled out an airport wide local music initiative in January of 2012. Seattle was inspired by the Austin airport’s music which it saw as representing the music culture of Austin.
