Darjeeling, a paradise for honeymooners and other holiday makers, is situated in the state of West Bengal. Darjeeling was the summer headquarters of the British to escape from the scorching heat. Situated at an average elevation of 2050 m above sea level in Lesser Himalaya, the city of Darjeeling is popular for long tea plantations. Black tea is famous here with its natural flavour. Darjeeling invites its tourists by its serene atmosphere, soothing climate and warm people.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway journey, included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site, is a breathtaking experience. This journey from Darjeeling to Jalpaiguri in a toy train which takes 8 hours is a lifetime experience. The zigzag movement of the toy train through the high elevated mountain areas captures the heavenly beauty of the city. This railway covers about 86 km through diverse landscape with stunning scenery. The main economy in Darjeeling is the Tea tourism that attracts many tourists not only from India but from abroad also. Darjeeling tea leaves have a great demand locally as well as internationally.

... Kolkata, is the capital of the Indian State, West Bengal. Situated on the banks of River Hooghly, Kolkata is popularly called the ‘City of Joy’. Kolkata is home to many eminent personalities like Subhash Chandra Bose, Rabindra Nath Tagore and Swami Vivekanand. Kolkata was the capital of Hindustan during the British rule. It is the birth place of Indian communist movement. Kolkata’s name is connected with the Nobel Prize winner of peace Mother Theresa and her several social services. The main attractions of this city are Marble Palace Mansion, Fort William, Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, Science city and Eden Gardens. The city is also called the ‘Cultural Capital of India’.

Darjeeling does not have an airport. The closest airport to Darjeeling is Bagdogra near Siliguri. Direct flights from Kolkata are available to Bagdogra. Cabs are available from Bagdogra to Darjeeling for Rs. 1200/- and for Rs. 800/- from New Jalpaiguri.

The nearest railheads to Darjeeling are Siliguri Junction and New Jalpaiguri. There are 5 trains pass through these stations from Kolkata. Express and superfast trains like Kanchanjunga Express, Puri Kyq Express, Guwahati Express and Sc Guwahati Express connect the two cities. From here you get trains to Darjeeling.

Bus is also a good option as it is comfortable and cheaper to travel from Kolkata to Darjeeling if you are alone or with one other tourist.

Taxis charge Rs. 12,000/- to reach Darjeeling from Kolkata. This cab is for four people and the vehicle is small. For seven people it costs Rs. 16,900/-.

If you have your own vehicle it takes approximately 8 hours 50 minutes to cover the 634 km distance from Kolkata to Darjeeling.
