Investment casting or popularly known as precision casting is a type of industrial process, which has been used for ages to create castings. In India there are many exporters of investment castings who export these castings to countries worldwide. Though investment casting can be made with all kinds of metals that can be casted, but primarily copper alloys, aluminum alloys and exporters of investment castings throw light on the workings of this casting and the various steps involved in it.
Creating a master plan:
Firstly, the mould-maker prepares a pattern from clay, wax, wood, steel, plastic etc.
Making the mould:
The master pattern is then used to make a mould and in this case the main master pattern can also be created from a metal at low melting point.
Creating the wax patterns:
Though it is referred to as wax pattern, other materials such as plastic can also be used. There are two different processes for creating wax patterns and either of the processes can be selected. In the case of the first process, the wax is poured into the mold and allowed for the coating to ...
... completely cover the surface of the mold. The second method is pouring molten wax into the mould and allowing it cool till a certain thickness is formed.
Gathering the wax patterns:
The next step is to removing the wax pattern from the mould and then creating more patterns as per the requirement and finally casting all of them together at once. It is also possible to create different wax patterns and then assembling them into one comprehensive pattern.
Creating the investment:
The next step is to create the investment, which is basically the ceramic mould created through three different steps. These steps include coating, stuccoing and hardening. The first step is about immersing the cluster into slurry and then allowing the excess to drain off. The cluster is dipped into fluidized bed and stuccoes with ceramic particle. In the third step the coating on the cluster is made to harden completely. All the three steps are repeated time and again till the investment reaches a certain level of thickness.
Dewax:
The next step entails cooling the investment completely and it can take up to 48 hours to dry. Once the investment is dried it is then placed in an autoclave or furnace where it is melted. It is important to conduct this step in a careful manner because at this stage shell failures can occur. When wax is heated it tends to expand therefore it is important that wax is heated quickly so that it can melt into the surface of the investment, thereby ensuring there is enough room for remaining wax to expand.
Investment casting burnout:
The investment is then made to go through a process called burnout where the mold is heated to remove moisture. The mold is then made to cool so that it can be tested.
Pouring and removal:
Most exporters of investment casting then place the mold into a tub that is filled with sand. The final step is to release the casting, which is done through shell hammering, vibrated or water jetted.
These are the different steps that most exporters of investment casting follow when this has to be prepared.
