Careers in Retail are extremely common within the public as the retail industry is booming and stores are always looking for new employees for retail jobs. Below are a list of 4 of the most common retail jobs with descriptions about duties involved in each role.

Sales Assistant
As a sales assistant in a retail store, you may be working a full or part time contract. You will have a range of different tasks such as dealing with and helping customers with any queries they may have, many retailers will stress the importance of delivering excellent customer service. You may also be putting out stock and tidying the shop floor, as well as rearranging departments, moving stock and selling goods. Your main focus will be to help customers, representing the company in a positive and polite manner while working in a team. Sales assistant is a common Retail job amongst teenagers looking for part time work throughout their studies at school.

Merchandiser
Merchandisers are responsible for deciding which products to stock and how/where ...
... they should be displayed. A products placement within a store is extremely important in relation to its sales, and so every merchandiser should be aware of the 'customer flow' of the store, the 'peak customer window' and prime locations within the store as to where products sell best. Merchandisers are responsible for predicting trends in fashion and deciding which products are most likely to appeal to customers. Your main tasks will be putting out stock and rearranging departments, working closely with the visual team of a store.

Assistant Manager
As an assistant manager, your main duty will be to work closely with the manager to provide support and take the place of the manager whenever he or she is unavailable. You and the manager, will be responsible for your team, ensuring they are focused and dedicated to their tasks, fulfilling them to the best of their ability. The range of duties you have will be affected by the size of the retail store. As mentioned you will be motivating staff, serving customers, helping to organise future promotions and ensuring your team or department meet expectations and goals set in sales and service.

Department Manager
As a department manager, you will be responsible for the whole department whether it be menswear, sports etc. as well as the team that works on that department. You will be reporting to your store/area manager about sales figures, budgets, standards of work, service and tidiness within your department. You will be responsible for hiring and training staff, organising/delegating tasks and problem solving to solve any issues with a lack in sales, staff motivation etc. You will need to have excellent communication skills, be organised and be able to motivate your team members.

With all Retail jobs, employees will need to stay up to date with current promotions and offers the store is publicising, as these change very often in retail and there may be some terms and conditions that customers will need to be informed about. They need to be polite and dedicated to delivering excellent customer service to each customer they speak to.
