Finding Someone Else's Web Host
You spent enough time looking for your own web host; so why would you ever want to find someone else's? Well, say for instance that a website continues to directly copy the content from your site onto theirs; or that one particular website continues to sabotage your website. In these cases, you might want to find out the name of that person's, or that website's web host so that you can report abuse. Or, maybe there's just a website that you really like, is always up and running, and that you think functions very well. In this case also you might want to find out who that person's web host is. So, how exactly do you do it?
It all starts on your own computer. Mouse over to the Start button at the bottom left-hand side of your screen and find the empty search field located at the bottom. This will bring up the Command Prompt, which will appear as a large black screen. On the screen there will be several codes and typing. All you have to worry about is typing (without the quotes) "ping website.com" where the cursor currently sits. Press "Enter" on your keyboard and you'll see "website.com." Erase this and enter the name ...
... of the website you're trying to find the web hosting of.
After the IP address appears, write down the IP address that appears; this will show as a number of letters divided by periods, or dots. Then all you have to do is perform a WHOIS-RWS search. WHOIS is a service that protects a website owner from having all of their information looked at and stolen by data mining programs, which can be a huge security breach and put you, and your business, in danger. But in addition to that, WHOIS will also tell you all the "behind the scenes" information about that website, including who the web host is. But first, you have to perform a WHOIS-RWS search on the IP address that you're looking for.
To perform a WHOIS-RWS search, all you need to do is head over to the American Registry for Internet Numbers' website. This is a non-profit site that keeps track of different Internet numbers and that helps ensure that all websites and website owners are adhering to and practicing proper Internet standards. The website for this organization can be found at https://www.arin.net. Once you're there, you'll see a "SEARCH Whois" field on the far right-hand side. All you have to do is enter the IP address of the site and you'll be returned with a website's WHOIS information. Located in these results will be the name of the web host they use, and all you have to do from there is copy it down and then contact them.
It might be difficult at first to know why you would ever need to know who someone else is using as a web host. But if any one website is really bothering you, or if there's one you really like, this is the kind of information that could really come in handy.
