Agra is the third largest city in the state of Utter Pradesh and a well known tourist destination not only in India but the world because of its symbol of love The Taj Mahal Agra. The city welcomes millions of visitors every year because it houses one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Agra is one of the main historical cities of India. Situated on the banks of river Yamuna, Agra was one of the important cities under Mughal period. This beautiful city was capital city for some of the great Mughal emperors like Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. Babur conquered the Lodhis to capture the city situated on the banks of River Yamuna and thus, the long association of Mughals with Agra started. The Mughal love of architecture translated into beautiful monuments such as Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and Sikandra. Emperor Akbar built the Agra fort and Fatehpur Sikri near Agra. Fatehpur Sikri remained his capital for around fifteen years after which the city was left isolated and the capital was shifted to Delhi. Though Agra's history is largely recognised with Mughal Empire, but the place was established much before ...
... it and has linkages since Mahabharat period and Mahirshi Angira in 1000 BC.

Shah Jahan, known for his keen interest in architecture, gave the city its most prized monument, the Taj Mahal. The city was known as Akbarabad during the reign of Mughal Empire and remained the capital of India during the rule of Aurangzeb until he shifted it to Aurangabad in the Deccan in 1653. After the decline of the Mughal Empire, the city came under the influence of Marathas and Jats and was called Agra, before falling into the hands of the British rule in 1803. The glory of Agra was at its peak during the reign of Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jahan.

There are several other attractions of Agra other than the Taj Mahal. Agra fort is one such monument whose construction was started by Akbar. The red sandstone structure is the best example of Mughal era craftsmanship. It is triangular in shape resting on a huge area of 2.4 km. Shah Jahan, raised white marble palaces here. He also built three white marble mosques in it namely Moti-Masjid, Nagina-Masjid and Mina-Masjid. The fort is beautified with number of richly decorated buildings exhibiting the Mughal style of art and architecture. As a tribute to the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Christi emperor Akbar established this city of Fatehpur Sikri combining the twin villages of Fatehpur and Sikri. The city is located at forty km from Agra. The city is full of palaces and courtyards and the four main buildings are the treasures of Mughal architectural marvel.

Agra is also home to many other structures like Itmad-Ud -Daulah's Tomb, often referred to as 'Baby Taj', owing to the similarity in architecture between the two, Chini Ka Rauza and Soami Bagh Samadh which are included in most of the travel packages.

Agra is situated just 30 minutes from the national capital city of Delhi and is easily accessible from there by road and rail. Agra has a major railway station that is well connected to most major cities in the country. The nearest airport is located in the neighbouring city of Delhi.
