The Nikon D800 is a professional grade full-frame digital single-lens reflex camera produced by Nikon. It was officially announced on February 7, 2012 and went on sale in late March 2012 for the suggested retail price of $2999.95 in the U.S., £2399 in the UK, and €2892 in the Eurozone.

... The DSLR line from the two biggies in the camera world, Nikon and Canon, has seen important updates recently. While Nikon is hedging its bets on the 36-megapixel D800, Canon responded by releasing the flagship EOS 5D Mark III.

The D800’s sensor has 36.3 megapixels, and it seems every one of them is good. The camera was tested shooting portraits, sports and landscapes, and even scores close to the best medium-format cameras. DxOMark even said that the sensor has “no weak points.”

When looking at bit depth, which refers to the ability of a sensor to distinguish minor variations in color and thus render an image closest to what the human eye sees, the D800 scored higher than any other full frame camera yet tested, falling behind only two medium format models, which are different animals altogether but on who's territory Nikon is openly looking to horn in on with the D800. Result: bit depth of 25.3.

Nikon concedes that UK customers may have to wait to get their hands on the D800 DSLR, despite last week stating that shortages were limited to the Japanese market.

The folks at DxO are intense about cameras and sensors, scoring the quality of a camera across a variety of categories and assigning scores based on rigid tests. When they say that the Nikon D800 sensor is the best they've seen, that's well worth paying attention to.

The D800, as DxOMark puts it, is "A full-frame sensor with no weak points." The RAW sensor results put the camera at the very top of DxOMark's list, beating out more expensive models and every other new camera on the market.

The D800 has a slightly larger monitor than the D700, an 8cm (3.2in) screen with 921,000 dot resolution and 170-degree viewing angle. It comes with a good heavy-duty clip-on screen protector as standard. Also new for this model is dual memory card format support. The D800 has two slots, one for CF cards, the other for SD. One nifty little improvement I noticed was perhaps the least significant, but I like the attention to detail. There's now a small white raised bead on the left of the body near the lens mount, which lines up with the white dot on the lens mount when fitting a lens. It's much easier to see than the small white dot on the mount ring itself, and makes changing lenses that little bit quicker.

While we acknowledge that there's a lot to a camera that cannot be captured by pure numbers, to avoid accusations of any kind of bias, we'll strict to the pure specifications for the sake of this comparison.

So who had an overall tie? Neither Canon nor Nikon fans for sure! Fun and games aside, stay tuned to NDTV Gadgets for exhaustive reviews of both the cameras.

Canon and Nikon both have brand new professional DLSR cameras fighting for the wallets of photographers and videographers the world over. We recently reviewed the Canon 5D Mark III, and are whipping up a review of the Nikon D800. In the meantime, we put together a comparison of the video capabilities of these two foes.

For a look at the D800's impressive real-world photo performance, check CNET's D800 review and D800 sample image gallery. For the camera itself, be patient: Nikon says the D800 is in short supply, and one customer I know who was told he'd get his this week just learned that it's now due in April.

No matter how you look at it, the Nikon D800 is unquestionably one of the best DSLRs on the market, and in terms of sheer picture quality and resolution, it is now the one to beat. It has class-leading colour depth and dynamic range, the best AF and metering system you'll find anywhere, and it produces amazingly detailed noise-free images even at moderately high ISO settings. It's essentially a D4 with a higher resolution sensor, in a smaller and lighter body, and for about half the price, and is going to be a massive hit with landscape, portrait and studio photographers. Its continuous frame rate is a bit slower than the EOS 5D Mark III, but that's not going to earn it any bad marks from me.

The Nikon D800 promises to let you take pictures in low-light environments reducing noise to a minimum and letting you get that perfect shot regardless of the conditions.

That's some promise, but proof is in the pudding, as they say, or in our case the chance to see an exclusive performance by the Blue Man Group in New York City courtesy of Nikon ,with us in possession of a Nikon D800.

The Blue Man Group performance is just one of many tests we are putting the camera through this week to find out how the D800 performs. So far we’ve been on a boat, and taken in a special Blue Man Group performance in some of the worst light we’ve ever seen - we don't get to the theatre much.

We’ve learnt a lot so far, not all of it specific to the D800 either. We’ve learnt that on-the-fly lens changing is still a real pain and that, at least for video, you need a way to support your SLR when you’re recording, otherwise it starts to look like you're drunk.
