The immune system is the system that protects an organism, in this case our human body, from invasion by viruses, bacteria, germs, parasites, toxins and all types of pathogen microorganisms.

Our immune system helps us to stay healthy by avoiding illness to contaminate our body. Put simply, our immune system keeps us alive. As soon as the immune system stops working properly or is overload, we become ill and may even die.
The human body is an ideal ground for many germs and they sure would like to break in and invade the body. It is the immune system job to keep them out. But if they do manage to get in, it is also the immune system job to look for and kill the invaders.

The skin is the first obstacle these invaders encounter, which offers a good guard for the body. The skin is not easy to go through and produces an assortment of substances that are dangerous to the invaders. Holes like the eyes, the nose and the mouth, which appear less difficult to invade have some defence too. They are protected by liquids that can capture mean invaders.

As you can see, immune systems are always ...
... busy and on the lookout for pathogens that are trying to damage our body. It is not an easy task because first of all the immune system has to recognize and keep in mind millions of various enemies.

Then, it has to fabricate the proper defence like secretions and cells to match up with and wipe out each one of them. This is done with the help of a complicated communication network. Millions of organized cells get together and exchange information back and forth. As soon as the immune cells receive the alarm, they start producing powerful chemicals. But the key to a healthy immune system is the fantastic ability to distinguish the body' s own cells and the foreign cells.

This is important since without this aptitude the immune system would have no clue of which organisms to attack or not. This is done with the help of "marker molecules". When the immune system defenders come across organisms transporting markers that say "foreign", they immediately start an attack. The faster the response the better they can get rid of the invaders.
