In English we know the forms of the verb to be without thinking. I am. You are. We are. They are. In German, each verb (action word) changes depending on who the verbs refers to ( I, you, she, we and so on) as well as the tense (such as present, past, or future). These changes are called conjugations. Have a look at the conjugations of the verb sein to be in the present tense.

Singular:-

Ich bin - I am
Du bist - You Are
Er ist - He Is
Sie ist - She Is
Es ist - It Is

Plural:-

wir sind - We Are
ihr seid - You Are (Casual)
sie sind - They Are
Sie sind - You Are (Polite)

Sein is a very important verb that you will be using all the time.

Das Wetter ist schön. - The weather is nice.
Das ist mein Bruder. - That is my brother.
Sie sind eingeladen. - You are invited (formal).
Wir sind Freunde. - We are friends.
