Phoenix – Mesa gateway airport was developed in 1941 to share the burden of the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport when it had nearly reached its capacity. Thus the airport has relieved much burden of the domestic flights from the Sky Harbor International Airport. It is now the focus of most of the domestic passengers and tourists who are travelling for no commercial purposes. In this way it has played a major role in regulating the air transport in the Metropolitan Area of Phoenix. Federal Aviation Administration classifies it as a reliever airport.The Mesa Gateway airport was developed from the former William Air Force base. The base had served the military for many years supporting their aircrafts, training the fighter pilots and also has great contributions in the World War II. It is still owned and controlled by the William Gateway Airport Authority. The authority consists of five boards of directors which include influential people of Gilbert, Queen Creek and Mesa.
