The history of cuisine in Hawaii is a long and storied one. Food has always been an important part of Hawaiian culture. This is easy to see when you examine the occurrence of the luau. Luaus are a tradition deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture and history. It's a practice that dates back as far as the 1800's.

Before the first luau in 1819 men and women were not permitted to eat together due to religious doctrine. Not only this, but there were foods which common people were not allowed to consume because they were not royalty. But in 1819 these practices were ended by King Kamehameha II when he invited women and commoners to feast with him in what is considered the very first luau. It was a great event that paved the way for one of the most popular and enduring celebrations.`

A luau is a great feast which showcases many of the different types of authentic Hawaiian cuisine. These days, Luaus vary in their presentation and in the types of foods that are served. But one thing remains true, a good luau is the perfect time for friends and families to come together to enjoy good food and entertainment. This is one of the ...
... most prevalent values found throughout Hawaii and one of the reasons luaus are still so popular today.

These feelings of goodwill and community are not just exclusive to luaus however. These are ideals that are foremost in the hearts of the Hawaiian people. And to be a successful restaurant on any of the islands your establishment has to establish this ideal as its cornerstone. This is something that Donn Beach was aware of and why he was able to find such great success with his Don The Beachcomber restaurants.

Don the Beachcomber is the prototypical Tiki restaurant. It's the archetype that many Tiki restaurants operating today are based on. Tiki restaurants are as celebrated now as they were decades ago. And there is one at each Royal Kona and Royal Lahaina Hawaii resorts. Don the Beachcomber restaurants have seen this type of longevity because of how well they create a warm and festive atmosphere--much like the ones found at a luau.
