New Zealand is well known for its awe-inspiring beauty with natural surroundings that leave an impression on everyone who visits. Waterfalls are a captivating sight in any part of the world and New Zealand has loads of them that are definitely worth a look. In this article we'll look at some of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls around the country to help tourists decide which of them are to be included in their itinerary.

New Zealand's highest waterfall has been under dispute for years, with some claiming Sutherland Falls and some claiming Browne Falls. The Sutherland Falls are located near the famous Milford Track on the South Island, with a total drop of 580 meters. The Browne Falls are located in Doubtful Sound, and with a drop of 836 meters, they are considered to be the ninth highest waterfall in the world. However, it depends on your definition of waterfall, as some say that Browne Falls are actually a cascade because the water flows down the mountain along the rocks and isn't free-falling water. Whatever your definition of waterfall is, either of these giant water wonders will leave you speechless as you ...
... admire their beauty.

The official number of waterfalls in New Zealand is put at around 1,500 but can never be determined, due to waterfalls appearing and disappearing due to glacial melts or heavy rain. The waterfalls of the South Island are typically formed by glacial movements and thus are very often higher, but with less water flow. The North Island waterfalls are usually formed by volcanic activity, allowing the water to wear down the softer rock, making for wider, lower waterfalls which are a bit more accessible to tourists than some of the North Island waterfalls. The Sutherlands Falls and the Bowen Falls are examples of glacially formed falls, with a spectacularly high drop but without a large volume of water flowing down. The Rainbow Falls in Northland are a great example of the heavier flowing, wider waterfalls of the North Island.

Notable waterfalls in the North Island include the Marokopa Falls located in the Waikato region, where many tourists come to visit the famous glowworm caves. Marokopa Falls has a drop of only 30 meters but it is rather easy to access and has a classically beautiful rectangular shape with reliable water flow so you won't be disappointed. Huka Falls is only 11 meters high but is one of the most visited natural attractions in New Zealand. Huka Falls has a high flow rate at 220,000 liters of water per second and thrill seekers will be delighted at the chance to canoe down the falls. Bridal Veil Falls is a 55 meter high waterfall in Waikato along a well maintained path with several lookout points.

The South Island, due to the glaciers and mountains located there, especially in the Fiordland, have tons of awesome waterfalls. Devil's Punchbowl Falls is located in Arthur's Pass National Park, has a drop of 131 meters, and is surrounded the beauty of the Southern Alps. Humboldt Falls is located along the Hollyford Track in Fiordland National Park, has a drop of 275 meters, and a sister waterfall alongside which adds to its grandeur which isn't easy to access but with a campervan rental it makes for an easier trip. Stirling Falls is a 155 meter waterfall deep in Milford Sound between Elephant and Lion Mountain, and one of the popular Milford Sound cruises will get you there.

With so many choices of lovely waterfalls in this naturally gifted country, one can be paralysed by the choices on hand. However, depending on your fitness level and taste in waterfall types there is something for everyone to be seen here in New Zealand. Luckily, many of them lie along well maintained tracks which allow easy access to their beauty. Just going to the Fiordland National Park alone will almost guarantee a waterfall sighting and many of the North Island waterfalls are a short drive from Auckland or Wellington. Without a doubt, the wonderful waterfalls of New Zealand are a must-see attraction for any tourist looking to enjoy the gorgeous nature here.
