Having a heated tube has become nearly standard on most new CPAP machines. With this new technology, many CPAP users ask “what use do I have for a heated tube?” The answer is quite simple if you have ever woken up to a rush of water running through your CPAP tube and into your CPAP mask. This phenomenon is called rainout. It essentially is a build-up of water in the CPAP tube during CPAP therapy due to condensation. Not only is this annoying, it can potentially be dangerous if aspirated into the lungs.

How does this condensation occur? Before answering the question, a few definitions are necessary. Ambient temperature is the temperature in a room or the temperature which is surrounding an object. Humidification is the process of increasing the water content of air. The interaction of ambient temperature with the CPAP’s heated humidifier creates what is termed by CPAP users as rainout.

Rainout typically occurs when the ambient temperature surrounding the CPAP is less than the temperature of the water within the heated humidifier. This, obviously, is amplified when ...
... the heated humidifier’s temperature is turned up. People prefer warm and humidified air when using CPAP therapy because it is subtler and less invasive that cold air. It also helps to prevent dry airway passages. But if you prefer sleeping in a cold room and have the heated humidifier as warm as it gets, the consequences are significant amounts of condensation forming in both the tube and mask.

ResMed was one of the first CPAP manufacturer’s to address this issue which caused much angst among the CPAP community. With the release of the ResMed S9 CPAP series, ResMed designed a heated tube, ClimateLine, which works in conjunction with the h5i heated humidifier and the climate control system to automatically deliver optimal temperature and humidity directly to the CPAP mask. ResMed has embedded a heated circuit directly into the CPAP tube that is controlled by the climate control algorithm. The CPAP’s algorithm interacts with a sensor at the mask and measures air temperature leaving the mask to provide a constant comfortable CPAP experience; one which reduces helps eliminate rainout, soothes congestion and dryness and creates an easier breathing process.

The ResMed S9 Auto CPAP Machine was built for comfort, durability and most of all effectiveness in helping sleep apnea patients better manage their health. Now with this new tubing system designed to prevent rainout, ResMed CPAP machines can further enhance the quality of sleep for individuals with this condition.

We hope this short ResMed S9 review of the Heated Breathing Tubing was helpful. The CPAP Shop is dedicated to keeping you informed on the latest products and technology available to use in conjunction with your ResMed S9 Auto CPAP Machine.

About the ResMed S9 Auto CPAP Machine

If you don’t use the ResMed S9 Auto CPAP Machines but would learn like to learn more abouth them, here is a brief ResMed S9 review:

The series includes an enhanced Easy-Breath motor
The motor is so quiet, it’s no louder than normal breathing
Foam- and noise-isolating materials are incorporated into the base of all ResMed S9 Auto CPAP Machines
The motor features small-diameter, lightweight impellers to provide lower inertia, enabling it to track normal breathing waveforms and create small oscillations in pressure that are necessary to detect apneic episodes
