How Railroad Companies Think About Railway Accidents

Long before public transportation and cars became available, people traveled by train. Hence, railroad companies have been in existence for a very long time. Rail companies are responsible for taking us from one place to the next. They offer an easy and highly convenient mode of transportation. Naturally, they are not only involved in the transportation of people. They also play an important role in trade and commerce, because they carry high amount of goods and products. In fact, were it not for the train, the industrial revolution could have panned out very differently. Public transportation has always played a huge role in the mobility of both goods and people, thereby increasing employability across different markets.
However, if we look at the history of rail road companies, we will notice that here have been some serious problems in the development as well. This is nothing new. Every great invention is coupled to great accidents, even after it has been invented and implemented. There are some major roadblocks that railway companies have had to overcome, including relationships between the companies and the government. ...
... Trains are often seen as a less safe option for public transportation. Particularly in the early days, trains were often derailed or robbed. Even to this day, if a train accident occurs, the human damage is far higher than that in a car accident. Railroad accidents affect not only the passengers, but also those people working for the railway line, as well as those who are involved in the transportation of the goods on the train.
President Abraham Lincoln was the first to take these issues into consideration. In 1862, he signed the Pacific Railroad Act, which all railroad companies had to adhere to. Through this act, the transcontinental railroad could be constructed. Eventually, this railroad became the link between California and all the other States. 1865 is seen as the golden age for railroads. In this era, rail companies were truly raking in the money, because they were the only real mode of transportation, with the exception of horses and carriages. The only possible transit was through trains. It took another 50 years before the first car was developed, and even longer before the average person was able to own a car.
However, although these companies had a lot of credibility and were seen as very reliable in taking a person from one place to the next, rail road companies started to struggle. This is because the demand for services went up so much, that they were no longer able to handle the demand. Hence, mass transportation on a different scale was needed. The great difficulty was that this had to be developed without existing services to stop.
It is believed that this is why there are still so many accidents on the railway line. Railway companies have recently stated that no fewer than 3,000 accidents occur on the railway lines every year. This includes accidents on the railroads, collisions and other problems. Each year, around 1,000 people die as a result of these accidents. Unsurprisingly, safety checks are numerous and standards are very tight.
Peter knows that accidents happen and that there is little that can be done. However, he feels secure that railroad companies do all they can to keep their passengers safe.
