Before you bring your new dog home, you’ll need to make sure that you have all the right essentials at home. Just as you wouldn’t come home from the hospital with your newborn baby without having kitted out the nursery to at least some extent, nor should you do the same when deciding to have a pet dog.

As with humans, your basic dog supplies to have ready and waiting must include somewhere for him to sleep and food for him to eat (and dog bowls to put the food and water in). The size of your dog bowls will depend on the size of your dog, but it is important that he has his own dedicated bowls which are kept clean and fresh. Stainless steel bowls are the easiest to keep clean and won’t break or chip as easily as a ceramic bowl.

To stay fit and healthy, your dog will need plenty of exercise as well as a good diet. Unless you have a large garden he can run around in independently, you will most likely need a collar and lead for walking him outside of your property. Dogs need stimulation, and so you’ll need to buy him some toys. Buying him things he can chew on may well prevent him from chewing on your shoes too! You’ll find that there are a whole host of different toys available for your dog to enjoy, so start off with a couple of different ones until you get an idea of his personality and what he likes to play with.
