The nasal septum is made of thin bone in the back and cartilage in the front and it divides the nasal cavity in two with each side covered by the mucous membrane. It should be positioned in the center with both the left and the right sides equally sized, allowing the individual to breathe normally. However, if the wall is not aligned properly, it means that the septum is deviated, sometimes far enough to cause unpleasant symptoms. In fact, some sources suggest that as many as eighty percent of individuals have off-centered nasal septum but for many of them having this disorder doesn't mean too much. Yet, when breathing is seriously affected, a septoplasty Los Angeles can be performed to correct the symptoms, along with a turbinectomy surgery which is a minor procedure also used to improve nasal breathing by increasing the diameter of the cross-sectional area of the nasal channel.

A deviated septum can be a birth defect but there are also many things that can cause it, including injuries or damages from previous medical treatments. Its symptoms include difficulty breathing, congestion, frequent nosebleeds, sinus infections, ...
... facial pains, headaches and post-nasal drip and unfortunately, sometimes they are chronic. A visit to a physician that specializes in these problems is definitely recommended and in most instances, a septoplasty Los Angeles remains the best course of treatment. It is considered a routine surgery that can easily be combined with other surgical procedures, such as rhinoplasty, sinus surgery or turbinectomy surgery, in order to provide long lasting results and relieve the problem. However, this procedure is performed entirely through the nostrils which means that no bruising or external signs occur. It basically involves cutting away damaged cartilage portions of the septum and removing or realigning them, after which a nasal packing is inserted in order to prevent excessive post operative bleeding. The good thing is that the entire procedure takes about one to one and a half hours, depending on the deviation and it can be done with a local or a general anesthesia which means that in most instances, the patient can be discharged in the same day.

As mentioned, a turbinectomy surgery is usually done along with a septoplasty Los Angeles and it involves careful trimming and reducing of the soft fleshy swellings of the inner sides of the nasal passages. The turbinates are structures within the nasal cavity that play a major role in adjusting the temperature and humidity of the air that an individual breaths through the nose because the very front of the largest and lowest turbinate, which is however the most important one, controls the valve of the nose. These turbinates basically look and act as a radiator that cleans the air of pollution at the same time. Therefore, a surgeon who performs a turbinectomy surgery must avoid the "empty nose" syndrome by not over-trimming these soft fleshy swellings. Furthermore, a turbinectomy surgery is a partial complete resection of the inferior turbinate with or without the guidance of an endoscope along with several instruments used to remove some of the soft tissue component. This surgical procedure is meant to help patients with significant nasal obstruction issues so it should be an optimal choice only when other treatments have failed, which is also the case of a typical septoplasty Los Angeles.
