CPAP machine and CPAP mask usage has made a significant difference in the lives of the approximately 12 million people in the United States who suffer from sleep apnea, a breathing disorder that affects people while they’re asleep.

In order to be prescribed for the use of a CPAP machine, an individual must undergo a sleep study, in which his or her breathing, snoring and oxygen levels during sleep are monitored and measured. If it is found that the person suffers from sleep apnea, the patient’s physician will have them make use of a CPAP machine. The CPAP machine sends continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) into air passages during sleep to help prevent blockages in the throat that lead to brief cessations of breathing.

The primary signs that a person may have sleep apnea include daytime drowsiness and impaired alertness, which result from the continual breathing stoppages and waking throughout the night. Sleep apnea is a condition that a physician can’t purely diagnose based on symptoms. A sleep study is the only way a doctor can be certain that sleep apnea exists and ...
... then prescribe the use of a CPAP machine. Used with a well-fitting CPAP mask, these machines can help the patient get a good night’s sleep and feel energized during the day, possibly the first time in years.

Developed in 1981, CPAP machines today are relatively small and quiet. They have advanced significantly both in technology and sound levels. The most modern CPAP machines (the ResMed S9 and Philips Respironics PR System One) are whisper quiet and travel friendly.

Unlike CPAP machines of a few years ago, most are roughly the size of a tissue box, so they’re convenient to place just about anywhere. Once a patient becomes comfortable with sleeping with a mask on their face, CPAP therapy typically becomes as routine and as easy as without CPAP.

A patient’s physician will provide complete information on the use of a CPAP machine and the accompanying CPAP mask. Staff at the sleep center, where sleep studies occur, can also be good sources of information. And, of course, there are numerous medical websites and forums that help patients better understand this condition and the CPAP equipment used to treat it.
