Angie's List is an innovative website that provides an extraordinary list of consumer reviews for companies throughout the country. This is an extraordinary way to capture word-of-mouth opinions from people from all walks of life, and all types of contractors, work and much more. Currently, Angie's List has approximately 1.5 million subscribers, and those subscribers post approximately 40,000 reviews each month. The idea behind Angie's List is to ensure that all types of service companies are certifiable, and that the only companies that are allowed to subscribe to the website, is those that have paid and registered, in order to prevent biased and/or anonymous reviews, that may simply be slanderous, or overly supportive, when neither of these occurred.

Angie's List was founded in 1995 by William Oesterle and Angie Hicks. The inspiration behind creating this website was inspired by Angie's difficult search for a contractor in Columbus, Ohio that was reliable, and did the work they were supposed to, on time and on budget. The search was on behalf of Oesterle, her former supervisor, she relocated to Columbus in order to ...
... help him create Angie's List, which initially began as a call-in service and a review publication about lawn care and home care. Angie went door-to-door, increasing membership and having them rate the services and performance of local contractor. Initially, the company was referred to as "Columbus Neighbors", patterned after an Indianapolis publication. Within a year, Angie was able to recruit over 1000 members, and employed her former supervisor to use his connections and skills as a venture capitalist to garner money from investors to improve and develop this business.

Angie's List uses report card type grading, ranging from A to F, similar to the Better Business Bureau. All of these ratings are based on price, responsiveness, quality, professionalism and punctuality of each company and its employees. While each company has its own page with an Angie's List's website, it provides a deposition of the business itself, where it offers, as well as customer reviews. The grade each company received is calibrated based upon the combined reviews, as well as the grades that have been given to each business from consumers. Employees of Angie's List have been trained to spot any type of review that seems like it may be an act of sabotage or bias, helping to improve the review system and make it as accurate as possible for all types of businesses.

It can be very beneficial for a company to be listed on Angie's List, because the process to be part of the website is extremely strict. You cannot pay Angie's List to be on the website, nor can you review your own company, or list your own name. In order to deter fake addresses and e-mail accounts from unscrupulous contractors, employees are required to read each report and ask that member if they have an affiliation or are they in competition with any business that they are providing a review for. In addition, any member can only report on any company on the website once in every six months. Despite the benefits, there is still some controversy over whether Angie's List members are being upfront and honest with their reviews. In 2007, a contracting company sued to Angie's List members for libel, along with a publishing agency and other defendants. Although the lawsuit was ruled in favor of all defendants involved in 2008, it still makes many people wonder about the legitimacy of this website, and the opportunities that it provides people looking for the services and opportunities for all types of businesses.

Overall, Angie's List is an ideal opportunity for anyone to learn more about any business or contractor that you are looking to use for any service in or around your home or business.
