Security Officer Career Rates High In "best Jobs" Report From U.s. News & World Report

Earlier this year, U.S. News & World Report issued a comprehensive "Best Jobs 2012" report, ranking Security Officer No. 31, and labeling job satisfaction in this field as "high."And that's no surprise to Patrick Amaral, President of NJ Guard Training Academy, a prominent security officer training school in South Plainfield, N.J."Individuals seeking a career as a security officer are rewarded with job stability and growth, solid wages, and the benefits of knowing they're making a difference," said Amaral. "We see it time and time again."According to the study:If public safety is your calling, a security guard position may be a good fit. Security guards help prevent fire hazards, larceny, vandalism, and other illegal activities. They also facilitate emergency procedures should such a dangerous situation arise. In the eyes of employers, the greatest deterrent of possible problems is a security guard's visible presence. Therefore, some positions can be more sedentary than others. ... from the report:  The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 18.8 percent employment growth for security guards between 2010 and 2020, adding 195,000 more professions.  The demand for security guards is higher in cities with more criminal activity. "Businesses of all sizes are adding security personnel, and we've always stressed to people considering a career as a security officer that it's one of the fastest-growing professions for this reason," noted Amaral."Someone aspiring to a career as a security officer should demonstrate a commitment to values such as integrity, vigilance, and helpfulness; a willingness for professional development; a focus on customer service; a desire to work as a team and an ability to utilize technology," said Rocco DeFelice, executive vice president of Securitas USA, in the report. A candidate will have ample opportunity to exhibit these qualities during the application process. As DeFelice explains, "The applicant should expect to complete an extensive application, which includes an assessment; go through a background investigation, to include a drug screen; participate in an in-depth interview; complete applicable licensing requirements and receive all necessary pre-assignment training." Another key quality employers look for is stability.
