Remodeling your kitchen is sometimes an involved and difficult process. It can be a messy, stressful and costly undertaking so here are a few tips to help you better manage the physical, emotional and financial aspects of your project.

When deciding on the schedule of events for you kitchen remodel it is best not to work with hard deadlines. If your project is extensive and you have out of town guests arriving in 8 weeks delay the project until after the visit. The stress leading up to this deadline will only increase as the days go by. You don't need that kind of pressure neither does your contractor.

Lots of the mess associated with your kitchen remodel can be diminished during the demolition stage of the job. Here are some good guidelines for keeping you place tidier while the work commences.

1] Make certain workers responsible for removing your old kitchen have an available access and short path from you kitchen to the dumpster. This will minimize the potential for damage to your property and make the job site a less hazardous one. If wooden doors are on the entrances through which trash is to be hauled ...
... consider removing the doors completely to get rid of the possibility of damage.

2] In order to keep dust molecules from circulating throughout your home it is crucial to be certain your contractor seals of all cold air returns in the kitchen while work is going on. After your new kitchen is done and ready for use you'll want to replace the filters in your furnace. This may also be a good time to have the air ducts cleaned as well.

3] Seal of any door openings and window pass throughs running from the kitchen to the rest of the home this will make the house cleaner and make for a more breathable environment while construction goes on.

A good way to avoid eating out too much during your kitchen remodel is to set up a temporary kitchen in another room. Save a few cabinets and a length of countertop for this purpose. Your new mini kitchen will ideally allow enough room for some simple meal preparation. Move your refrigerator to this area along with some smaller appliances like a microwave, hot plate or a toaster oven. At least you can have a place for the coffee pot and you'll be able to keep the restaurant tab a bit lower too.

Don't be surprised when something that isn't scheduled for construction gets destroyed. You need to understand up front that this is an unfortunate part of the kitchen remodeling process. It's not uncommon for doors and door casing to be scratched or for flooring that isn't being replaced to get damaged. These are referred to as casualties of construction. The key is to keep your cool and make sure your builder is aware of each issue and that he is responsible for the repair.

Kitchen remodeling can be a big financial commitment but one good way to get a break on the price is to donate used items to a local charity. Cabinetry, appliances and fixtures can all be donated to local charities if they are in decent working order and good condition. You will be helping others in need and you'll get a break on your next tax return.
