Reputation Management - Do You Have Any Cleaning Up To Do?

With the job market heating up you had better make sure your online reputation isn’t going to hurt you during a job search.
Employers are using more tools than ever to help them decide who the right person is for their open positions up to and including checking an applicant’s Facebook and Twitter profile and posts.
• If you think that won’t be an issue, double check it again. Many a celebrity or politician thought they were sending private messages or that no one would care.
• One lady lost her job of 30 years over a Facebook post and now can’t get work!
Face book and other social media sites change their privacy policies or update software that may change your settings. Don’t get caught by something so simple to fix. I have a friend who posts rather “interesting” comments on his Facebook page that I am sure will eventually catch up to him.
So if you need to clean up your reputation, do it before things get out of hand. There are even services out there to help really public people with reputation management but most people just need to think before they post things. If you ...
... are OK with your children or your mother reading your posts you’re probably not going to have problems later.
It all comes back to impressions, what impression does your profile imply? We all know you only get one chance to make a first impression. Often time’s employers will spend just 20 seconds reviewing an applicant’s presentation before deciding whether or not you make the cut – this is why reputation management services exist.
This also extends into other areas like your email address or outgoing voicemail message – do these imply a professional attitude?
• Believe or not, people with email addresses along the lines of “ILikeToParty@mail.com” somehow think that’s appropriate when applying for a job
• Letting your 4-year old be the voice your voicemail message may be cute but does nothing to help your cause.
Just like many people who get their family and friends opinions before doing something important, so your reputation is definitely one place you should get some extra input. Now I’m not saying you have to be an angel but do whatever you can to paint yourself in the right light to the outside world.
In closing, we will often review our clients online and offline reputation as well as their overall image to make sure they stand the best chance of getting an interview and hired. If you want us to help with reputation management, just let us know.
