It’s that time of year again when warm nights move dinner outside and conversation goes long into the night. Or at least it would if those pesky bugs would go away. Since the tenacious little critters are part of nature we can’t exactly make them disappear but we can encourage them to go elsewhere.

Citronella candles are a step in the bug free direction. Citronella is oil that is extracted from lemongrass, a natural repellent of insects. Citronella became popular in 1948 when it was encouraged for use by the government. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists citronella as a preferred bio-pesticide recommended in keeping mosquitoes and other flying insects at bay.

Fortunately, for all of the late night party hosts, citronella has been added to candles and tea lights for decades, both of which are readily available. At one time citronella candles came with a heavy after-scent that made them unpleasant to have around. These days they widely unscented.
