A Manual Wheelchair is different to a powerchair as it does not require electricity to move it forwards and around corners. Manual wheelchairs are instead powered by the strength of the wheelchair user, or an attendant who can push the wheelchair along.

Wheelchair users who have enough upper body strength often prefer these wheelchairs, as they can drive the chair forward by spinning the wheels underneath them, giving them greater independence of movement. Using a manual wheelchair in this way also builds upper body strength and is great exercise for active wheelchair users. These users will often choose a lighter wheelchair to allow them to get around more easily, and specialist active user wheelchairs in this category are sporty in design to allow greater manoeuvrability.

Power chairs are designed for users that do not have the upper body strength to be able to power a wheelchair themselves. Instead, these wheelchairs are powered by an onboard battery that can be re-charged and are controlled by a joystick. With a powerchair, even people with limited mobility can enjoy greater independence.
