The need to use a laptop tray in conjunction with a notebook computer arose when laptop users and researchers discovered that laptop use can be uncomfortable and unhealthy. Laptop use can be uncomfortable because laptops weren’t designed to properly fit the human body. This imperfect human/machine interaction causes the body to twist and tweak unnaturally so that the person can view the laptop screen and use the keyboard. Twisting the body unnaturally leads to alignment issues, pain, and muscle strain. A leading cause of shoulder, neck, and back pain is prolonged use of computers. Repetitive motion stemming from computer use (think moving a mouse and typing) have been associated with the development of long-term strain injuries. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and muscle strain, and arthritis are a few of the ailments derived from repetitive motions. Finally, laptops generate heat and radiation. When used in close proximity to the body (think: on your lap, chest, or legs) the laptop’s heat and radiation has been shown to cause burns (called “Toasted Leg Syndrome”) and has even been associated with the development ...
... of cancer and infertility.

Numerous companies have devised laptop tables that make using a laptop computer more comfortable, enjoyable, and healthy. In general, a laptop tray is designed to accomplish one (or multiple) objective such as: cool a computer, elevate the computer, adjust the laptops viewing angle, or form a stable platform on which the user can computer. Laptops run on electricity and hence have a tendency to get hot; very hot if you’re running several programs or using a lot of memory. Excessive heat buildup without proper ventilation has been scientifically shown to shorten the notebook’s lifespan. A laptop tray with either a built-in fan or made of material that naturally dissipates heat, such as aluminum, helps keep computers cool and running faster longer.
Elevating laptops and adjusting the screen’s viewing angle are both ways to improve laptop ergonomics. Ergonomics defines how people interact with machines and laptop ergonomics spells out the proper or “healthy” way for people to use their laptops. A laptop tray that elevates screens to eye-level can prevent hunching and improve seated posture. A laptop table that adjusts in viewing angle can eliminate screen glare and decrease eyestrain, especially for people using glasses and bifocals. The most ergonomic laptop stands actually combine height- and angle-adjustability into one package.

Laptop portability is amazing and lets people compute virtually anywhere – at a desk, on a couch, sitting in a recliner, and laying in bed. Soft surfaces and relaxed environments away from the desk make it a little tricky to comfortably and healthily use a laptop. These environments tend to lead to poor posture because it’s difficult to prop your computer in a comfortable position. Also, soft surfaces (couches, beds, and you’re your body) trap laptop heat – making laptops run even hotter than normal. A laptop tray designed to form a stable platform on a bed or couch can make computing much more comfortable and can also extend the life of your laptop by helping it run at a cooler temperature. A laptop table for bed that slips over your lap and rests on the surface of the couch or bed can still let the user move around comfortably without the worry of upsetting the computer.

Overall, an ergonomic laptop tray can make computing more comfortable, healthy, and enjoyable. When looking for a new laptop table, pick one that meets the pitfalls or your daily laptop use.
