Cellulitis – A Serious Skin Disease
Cellulitis is a skin infection caused by the bacteria known as staphylococcus and/or streptococcus. In certain cases it may be caused by other bacterium. Did you know that your skin has various kinds of bacteria on it? If you ever get a cut, a scrape or an insect bite, the bacteria on your skin will get deeper into your skin tissue. As a result, you will get an infection in a spot where the integrity of your skin has been broken, and if left untreated, it may further move into your blood stream, and then it will be carried around inside of your entire body. As a result, it may cause some serious complications and even death!
As you may see, it is very important to treat Cellulitis at the first sign of symptoms. Some people have a chance of contracting cellulitis even if their skin hasn’t been broken. Usually it may happen to diabetics, older adults, and people who have a weak immune system. Those people who have a history of peripheral vascular disease are also at high risk of contracting Cellulitis. Even more so, people who handle raw meats and soil regularly, without wearing proper apparel, are also at greater risk. ...
... The treatment of Cellulitis may be done at home (under doctor’s supervision); however, if it is a severe case, than most likely it will lead to a hospitalization.
What are the symptoms?
The main symptoms which will indicate the need for an immediate cellulitis treatment include:
- Inflammation of the skin and/or redness, especially around the area of an open lesion
- Pain or tenderness around the affected area accompanied by warmness of the skin
- Increased body temperature
- Pain in the joints accompanied by stiffness
- General feeling of weakness
How to treat and prevent Cellulitis
Once inside your body, the infection tends to spread quickly, so it is important to see the doctor as soon as possible. After an evaluation by the doctor, he will prescribe a proper course of treatment. If Cellulitis has been caught on time, a week’s worth of antibiotics treatment twice a day should take care of the problem. But, if the infection stepped into a severe zone, then the hospitalization may be required, and the antibiotics will be introduced into your blood stream via IV (Intra-Venous).
To prevent, or lower the chances of contracting Cellulitis, one must practice a good personal hygiene and the skin should always be kept clean. If a scrape or a cut should occur, wash it with soap and water, and then apply some antibiotic ointment to minimize the chances of infection.
