Located in East Malaysia with Sarawak, Sabah is Malaysia's second largest State. Its natural attractions entice travellers in search of a different kind of Southeast Asian experience. Those with a taste for adventure will find that Sabah has almost everything. Celebrated among nature lovers, Sabah has lush tropical forests which have more than their fair share of unique wildlife. Their easily accessible national parks and reserves ensure that certain animals, such as the endangered proboscis monkey can be seen in their natural habitat.

One can choose jungle trekking, cave exploring, water rafting, visiting remote beaches, diving in secluded islands, or even visit longhouses. Sabah is simple yet sophisticated. The Kinabalu National Park, located in northwest Sabah, is Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Besides playing host to Mount Kinabalu, the Kinabalu National Park is a botanical heaven. Within the forest is an array of habitats supporting lush flora and fauna; it is home to the worlds’ largest variety of nepenthes, a carnivorous pitcher plant. On an average it takes two to three days to reach the peak. So there is accommodation provided. So I did the necessary to scout around and find me a cheap hotel in Kota Kinabalu. If you’re not an experienced climber, like me, then I recommend you choose the Timpohon trail for your trek up. Although it is not an exceptionally easier climb, it is much more manageable than the tough Mesilau trail.

Once you’ve trekked up the mountain, it’s needless to say that you will return with aching muscles. So, take your time and soak in Poring Hot Springs. Part of the Kinabalu National Park, is a popular weekend retreat for locals. Around 43 kilometres away from the park headquarters and surrounded by greenery, this manmade attraction features concrete pools with steaming sulphurous water.

The famous Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah was founded in 1964 to rehabilitate orphan orang-utans. The site is 43 square kilometres of protected land at the edge of Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve. Today around 80 to a 100 orang-utans are living in the reserve. The facility provides medical care for orphaned and confiscated orang-utans as well as many other wildlife species. Other animals also include; sun bears, Sumatran rhinos and pygmy elephants. A visit to the Sepilok Rehabilitation centre benefits the orang-utans in a number of ways; the entrance fees paid goes directly to paying the staff, training of specialist guides and providing food to rehabilitate the orang-utans back into the wild.

Constantly rated as one of the top diving destinations in the world, the Sipadan Island is not to be missed for those who love scuba diving or even snorkelling. More than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been recorded in this ecosystem. You can dive here almost all year round. However, the best conditions at Sipadan are from April to December. It is best to go early to beat the crowd and make sure that you get a chance to dive as only 120 diving permits are given out per day. Verify that your dive operator has valid permits as some companies have been caught diving without official permits. Please note that it is no longer possible to stay on Sipadan as it is now a protected site. You will have to stay somewhere nearby and get a boat to the island. I do my best to find me a cheap hotel in Malaysia when I go diving or snorkelling as it would only be a day trip for me. Tune hotels are great money savers as there is no need for fancy resort-like extras for me.

An excursion to East Malaysia, wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Sarawak. Located in the Gunung Mulu National Park,is the world’s largest cave chamber, called the Sarawak Chamber, as well as the Pinnacles’; limestone crags with sharp peaks. Explore Mulus’ vast cave network; the caverns are home to various wildlife species such as birds, bats, reptiles and amphibians. Start out with a visit to Lang Cave and Deer Cave; the next day, you may visit Clearwater Cave (10th longest in the world), where you can swim in a nearby stream. I would also suggest the Niah caves as these caves have pre-historic origins. As these will be 2 to 3 day trips, I would suggest staying in Bintulu as it happens to be a gateway to many destinations. As I usually travel on a budget, it was easy to find me a cheap hotel in Bintulu, Sarawak.

The Rajang River is the longest river in Malaysia. There are plenty of sunset river cruises available; you will have to check for the best deal. Safari cruises are often organised, where you get to sit in the boat and watch the peaceful natural surroundings as the boat wanders through the river. Visitors must go to the town of Sibu to access the river. Further up are some longhouse villages inhabited by Iban people who will cordially accommodate visitors. As well as being entertained by cultural dances and songs at night, visitors will have the opportunity to see the lifestyle and workings of a longhouse community.
