Finding ways of improving your home's energy efficiency is something that many home owners are looking to do (and if you are not, you should be!). The question is though, how do you do it? Well here are 5 tips to help you make your home more energy efficient and, at the same time, reducing your utility bills.

Number 1 - Assessing your roof

If you consider that your roof has the sun on it all the time, it has to take a lot of heat and if you have an air conditioning unit in the attic, it is going to have to work extremely hard to counter the amount of heat in the house, especially if you have the unit set to a lower than average temperature. As the air conditioning unit works harder, your utility bills are increasing by the minute, leaving you with a large bill at the end of the month. To counter this you can install a radiant barrier which reduces the heat transfer and reflects the heat back out again.

Number 2 - Quality of your windows

The windows in your home often get overlooked and get left until a point where you absolutely need to change them. If you have not replaced them for many years or ...
... you live in an old home, you may need to look at upgrading your windows. Heat can escape from windows and if you only have single glazed windows, your heating system is going to have to work harder. Double, and now, triple glazed windows will help keep the heat in and your utility bills down.

Number 3 - Look for leaks

Leaks in the home can quickly become a major headache, as well as letting the heat out the home, a leak can cause damage to the walls and carpets in your home which can be very expensive to replace. It is easy to fix them so don't let a leak escalate.

Number 4 - Check the doors

Your front and back doors are important to get right because they are one of the first thing someone sees and first impressions count for a lot, especially if you are looking to sell. Draught excluders are good purchases to reduce the draught in your home but you need to make sure you have a high quality door to match to really increase energy efficiency.

Number 5 - Light bulbs

You may have heard that energy saving bulbs are better but just how much better? Well, they use about 75 per cent less energy and last around six times longer. Enough said really.

Make sure your home is energy efficient and these 5 tips will help you. Products such as composite bi folding doors and triple glazed windows are just two options you have.
