Hardwood conservatories have been popular since the nineteenth century. As well as being strong and durable, they have a somehow “softer” appearance than the bright white plastic conservatories many homeowners now prefer.

Hardwood conservatories were first built in Victorian times. Back then, they were used for growing seeds and plants brought back from warm climes. That was the age of exploration and of empire, of course. Like the original orangeries from which conservatories evolved, their thin frames and large panes of glass afforded a warm environment with plenty of light, which also provided protection from the dangerous elements.

These days, hardwood and timber conservatories are more often used as areas in which to sit. They offer a light-filled extension to the house; a bridging point between the warmth and comfort of the interior, and the sun and open of the garden. Of course, some people continue to keep plants in their conservatories. A few carefully selected pots can enhance that feeling of creating somewhere which is neither inside nor outside, but combines the best of the two.

We all want ...
... to do our bit to save the planet and one of the many advantages of choosing a timber framed conservatory is that it is environmentally friendly. Ethically farmed timber is taken from old trees, with young saplings planted in their place. This not only ensures the next generation of forests, but also helps to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; trees take in carbon dioxide and store it within their trunks. If the wood is burnt, this carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere once again. If, on the other hand, the wood is cut, treated and used as a building material, the CO2 goes nowhere. Your conservatory is doing its bit for the environment.

Timber is also an incredibly thermally efficient material. There is a notion that conservatories are only of use during the summer and that for the rest of the year they are too cold to use. Wrong. That may once have been the case, but modern double glazing techniques mean conservatories can remain warm throughout the year. With modern double glazing, your hardwood conservatory can be up to five times more thermally efficient than a traditional, single-glazed one. Conservatories were, after all, originally designed to provide a snug little space for oranges and the like, so why wouldn’t they be warm enough for people?

Perhaps most importantly for many home owners, hardwood is a very durable material. With the minimum of attention, your conservatory will keep its appearance for many years. PVC and plastic conservatories have their own benefits, but require regular cleaning in order to avoid becoming grubby. With your hardwood conservatory, you buy it, erect it, have it painted or stained in a colour of your choice, and then sit back and enjoy a great looking addition to the home which you know will last for years.
