Creating Your Music Social Network

When it comes to the music social networks out there, it is important, as a musician, that you be a part of it. There are a variety of ways to build your music social network, from the in-person meet 'n greet to an online music social networking site. Ultimately, you will find that the more balanced your marketing campaign, the better off you will be. What it all comes down to is this: your fans are not always going to magically be invited to your shows and fall in love with you right then and there. Some of them will be fellow musicians who you form friendships with and find that you have a great deal of respect for one another. Other times, you will create fans from all over the world by offering up tracks on the Internet. It is up to you to create a global market for your music!
What should you look for in a networking site? Well, a number of things depend on what you are looking for. If you don't have a website yet and don't plan on getting one (which, by the way, is a really dumb thing- websites will serve you well) then you should at least open an account with a networking site that will provide you with ...
... a URL that you can refer your friends to. In a more reasonable world, you would simply be adding a banner to your website (that links to the networking site) saying "come check us out here and listen to our tracks." If you are interested in selling your music online, then that is a good thing to look for in a site.
Otherwise, look for sites where you can upload your group's pictures- whether album images or fun shots from shows, etc. You also want to be able to upload tracks or entire albums onto the site so that your fans can listen to your music on the site (and buy it or not, depending what you've decided). Most people who are into interacting and connection with people on networking sites like the ability to actually contact others, so having a designated space where your fans can leave you notes, letting you know how much they enjoyed the new album or what a great time they had at the show can help you create more of a relationship with your fans. It is their support that makes your career possible, so the more you can give them, the more they'll give in return.
